How to Care for Crowns & Bridges

Crowns & bridges are a great way to enhance the function and appearance of your smile. If you have cracked or chipped teeth, or missing teeth, crowns & bridges can restore the appearance of your teeth and give you more self-confidence. These appliances are cemented onto your natural teeth, so taking care of them is important.

Crowns & bridges

Before your dentist installs your permanent crowns & bridges, you will have temporary ones. Caring for temporary crowns & bridges is a little bit different and involves the following guidelines:

  • Because these are not designed to stay in your mouth forever, they are not designed to stand up to hard things, like ice, or extremely sticky food, like caramels. Avoid hard and sticky items during this time.
  • Continue brushing and flossing daily, but be sure to be gentle around your temporary crowns & bridges.
  • If you notice any problems, call your dentist right away.

Once you get your permanent crowns & bridges, care becomes a little easier:

  • Treat your permanent appliances like your natural teeth.
  • Continue brushing and flossing daily.
  • Do not chew ice or other extremely hard food. Be cautious with sticky food like caramel.
  • If you notice any problems, call your dentist right away.

Other care routines that will help protect your remaining natural teeth and your crowns & bridges include switching to an electric toothbrush with soft bristles, using antibacterial mouthwash daily, and investing in a Water Pik to help clean between your teeth and in hard-to-reach places.
